NDU Technical Communications Specialist

The Technical Communications Specialist will work as a member of an interdisciplinary technical team within the National Defense University’s (NDU’s) Information Technology Directorate (ITD). This role will be responsible for creating a variety of technical communication products and assisting with the rollout of new and updated technical services and capabilities.


  • Establishes an internal communications strategy for ITD in conjunction with senior managers.

  • Attend and/or facilitate technical team meetings within ITD to capture new initiatives, gather updates on ongoing activities, and create status reports for each team.

  • Assists with gathering technical requirements for new technologies or capabilities to be introduced into the ITD environment or user community.

  • Determines the most effective way to communicate technical information to various audiences.

  • Storyboard or translate ideas to graphic designers and/or programmers.

  • Assists with the planning, project management, and rollout of new technical initiatives or updates to existing technologies.

  • Ensures team-level and ITD-level initiatives and technical projects are successfully communicated to internal stakeholders and the user community as needed.

  • Creates technical documentation and graphics of systems and network

  • Creates technical designs and specs

  • Creates technical literature as needed

  • Plans, edits and writes content for a variety of internal communication mediums (e.g., At-A-Glance reports, e-newsletters, technical requirements template, monthly report to the Program Manager or CIO, social media content). You will be required to develop the layout, look, and feel of the communication products

  • Keeps Program Managers and CIO abreast of progress and responds to questions

  • Ensures internal communications messages are consistent across all mediums and for different technical teams within ITD

  • Ensures internal communication messages are consistent with external communication messages

  • Responds to feedback from staff and adjust communications content accordingly

  • Works with Program Managers and the CIO to handle the internal communication response to crisis situations (e.g., outages, service changes) that could affect ITD’s reputation and the user community’s perception of ITD 

  • Advises senior executives of developments throughout ITD, either face to face or through regular written communication

  • Develops templates for different communication products, including technical documents.

  • Captures information on internal accomplishments, updates, and need-to-know information at the team and ITD level and communicate information to the Chief Information Officer, Program Manager, and other stakeholders, including the NDU student/user community, on a regular basis (weekly and/or monthly) as a standardized communication product

  • Assists with putting together presentations or delivers presentations at organizational events

  • Drafts messages or scripts for senior executives for presentation dissemination various stakeholder in written or spoken form, including as social media content

  • Other duties as required

Required Education and Experience

  • 3 or more years of technical or general communication experience

  • Bachelor’s degree is required 

  • Fundamental knowledge of communication strategies and tools

  • Experience communicating technical information or with technical writing, preferably related to IT

  • Strong knowledge of grammar, composition, and writing style guides

  • An approachable demeanor and strong motivation to go above and beyond 

  • Capability to multitask and handle multiple projects/tasks with competing deadlines

  • Strong written and verbal communication and the ability to follow oral and written instructions

  • Ability to be resourceful and problem solve quickly and at times work under pressure

  • The ability to work efficiently and effectively, while maintaining attention to detail

  • Self-motivated, results oriented, resourceful individual with effective time management skills

  • Ability to take direction well from multiple people 

  • Excellent interpersonal and computer skills; Must have intermediate knowledge of a variety of software applications such as: (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint).

  • Fundamental knowledge of social media management tools

  • Must have knowledge of office administrative procedures, and knowledge of use and operation of standard office equipment, at a level generally acquired through related experience

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience working with IT information or in an IT environment preferred

  • Knowledge of MS Visio preferred

  • Prior Government or working for a Federal Contractor is highly preferred
