Cyber Lab Technician

Location:Fort McNair, Washington DC

As a Cyber Lab Technician, the individual will be responsible for administering a Cyber Security Lab for The National Defense University (NDU) Information Technology Directorate (IDT) team.  In this role, the Lab Technician will test all security patches provided by the industry and the DoD to ensure they do not have negative impact on the operational systems, using a lab environment segregated from the production network.  Additionally, the individual will work with and provide guidance to the NDU Faculty, assists the Operations Team with cyber security compliance issues; provide guidance, research, and teaching when appropriate.  


  • Provides technical services and laboratory/next-generation learning environment support services for the lab equipment, software, systems, interfaces, networks, and simulation management
  • Manages an experiential center of education that leverages high-end computing and cutting-edge technologies; provides students with hands-on experience with the latest cyber/simulation technologies
  • Provides support to labs and classroom technologies to support learning efforts which will result in students having positive hand-on simulation and gaming experiences
  • Assists with crisis management learning through experiential activities and other courses as required
  • Researches and explores emerging technological advancement that will enhance the entire curriculum to meet NDU’s simulation and gaming mission
  • Updates laboratory operating systems (Windows 7 Linux/base stations to Windows 10)
  • Identifies and deploys cutting edge instructional technologies or DoD specific technologies for integration into labs
  • Checks laboratory inventory for functionality or replace with newer laptops 
  • Migrates virtual machines to new machines; manages projectors and functionality
  • Provides advice to Information Assurance (IA) faculty, staff, and students in technical areas
  • Provides support for installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining laboratory equipment and software
  • Provides documentation and initial training of technology insertions
  • Maintains laboratory standards within the enterprise to include desktop image, office productivity tools, gaming and simulation software, and virtual world technologies for input and output devices
  • Provides support in conducting technical and functional analyses and develop prototype and demonstration models
  • Troubleshoots and analyzes problems with laboratory equipment to resolve deficiencies
  • Performs other tasks as required by OSC and the Government contracting office

Required Qualifications/Education and Experience

  • 5 or more years cybersecurity professional experience
  • Active Security + Certification 
  • Must have prior experience with Offensive and Defensive Crypto Operations
  • Familiar with new cyber tools/technologies to enhance the learning experience
  • Prior experience with DoD, NIST, and RMF processes
  • Ability to problem-solve, complete projects, and introduce advanced equipment
  • Working knowledge of IT governance, risk management, and compliance practices
  • Strong knowledge of Workstation Administration and Tier I Service Desk Capability
  • Must have and maintain Secret Security Clearance
